Understanding the Difference: Co-ops vs. Tutorials
Homeschool Co-ops
- Definition: A cooperative where two or more parents agree to homeschool together.
- Parental Role: Parents must take part in teaching or volunteering; these are not drop-off programs.
- Cost: Generally low, as parents share the workload and only pay for supplies or shared fees.
- Structure: Can range from two families meeting at home to formal K-12 groups meeting in churches.
Homeschool Tutorials
- Definition: A more formal arrangement where a group hires private tutors to teach specific classes.
- Parental Role: Parents typically drop off students but remain responsible for supervising coursework on the days the tutorial does not meet.
- Cost: Higher than co-ops, as fees cover professional tutor salaries and administration.
- Structure: Often run by a board that chooses the curriculum and philosophy (such as Classical or College Prep).
